February 2008 Newsletter:

The weather continues to be kind to the cowboys this winter.  In January we had 77 participants and this month 67 cowboys and cowgirls signed up.  The day started quite cool but became sunny and perfect for cowboy action shooting match.

Warcat participated with us for the first time and is our newest club member.  Except for one stage he shot a clean match.  Congratulations!

K-town Buzzard was a first time shooter and had a fine match. We hope to see you on the range again soon.

The Smoky Mountain Shootist Society is one of the largest clubs the country.  Many of you renewed your memberships, and thanks for that.  Renewals are due January first with a grace period though the end of March.  Those of you who have not yet done so, please do so soon, so that we can continue to be such a strong club.  The fee is $40 and can be sent to SMSS, P.O. Box 32894, Knoxville, Tennessee 37930.

Tabasco Jot has been knocking on the door at several of our recent monthly matches but this month he was really “hot” and ended up as the top hombre;  Congratulations!!!!  Fiddleback placed second.  The others in the top ten were Festus D. Deputy, Slater, SA Pondwater, Ottway Smith, Widowmaker, Marshall Too Tall, Last Kiss and Tennessee Tombstone.

Last Kiss again was the top lady shooter this month and ninth overall. Great shooting; and shooting gunfighter!!!!!!  The other ladies were Roma Jane, Feather Dancer, Cookie Lynn, Short Cake and Triple J.

Pards we must pause here and recognize a historical event!  About 8 years ago, a rebel shooter, our Ramrod – Tennessee Tombstone was a prime mover in starting the “Smoky Mountain Outlaw” class.  We now have a noteworthy and large group of shooters participating in this category at several clubs in the region; shooting revolvers (one-handed) and shotgun from the hip.  Well pards, this month Tennessee Tombstone had a clean match and a top ten finish, an extraordinary performance. This came at a price; it seems now he has to trade for a larger hat.

Posse Writeups:

Posse Two

It started out being cold for the second SMSS match, but by the time shooting started the weather was sunny, clear and cool.  At least the weather was cool, the shooting was fast and very competitive.  Leading Posse 2 thru the stages was DOUBLE EAGLE DAVE.    GROUNDHOG MAN kept on top of things at the loading table.  A big job this month since there was more than one stage with only 9 rounds for the rifle.   CHEROKEE DEACON kept the unloading table clear when he wasn't burning some powder.   HOMBRE SIN NOMBRE  decreased the life expectancy of everyone by at least a year due to all the smoke he created.   We found out that he carries two rifles for a reason.  On Stage 4 his 73 jammed up and had to bring out the 66 to finish the day.  TENNESSEE HAWK and WINCHESTER WOOD kept the posse moving by jumping in where needed and making sure everyone did their part.  COTTON MOUTH KID and CROCKET CREEK KID had a great second match.  They are shooting better and learning the ropes on how the posse runs.  First time shooter K-TOWN BUZZARD had a great first match.  He has been around SMSS for over a year.  He shows up and helps his dad, GROUNDHOG MAN.  Well, now he gets to have fun instead of just watching the fun.

There was some hot competition from the rest of the posse.  Everyone was shooting fast, but not without some problems from everyone.  If it wasn't a miss or three, then you were running to the wrong gun.  TABASCO JOT shot a great match and helped out with the timer.  SA PONDWATER started off great, but had three misses on stage 3 before he even knew he had the first one.He kept up the good shooting, to keep pressure on the rest of us, or maybe that was just for TABASCO JOT.  SLATER, WIDOWMAKER and FIDDLEBACK were up to their usual antics and shooting and helping out.

In the end Posse 2 ended up having a great day of shooting and socializing.  Oh, by the way, we also had 5 of the top 10 shooters and 5 category winners.  Silver Senior, Traditional, Modern, Gunfighter, Frontier Cartridge.

Posse Five

What was supposed to be a fairly raw and windy day, turned out to be a wonderful day to shoot cowboy.  Badlands Beck did a fine job as posse leader!  Last Kiss outshot most of us, all day.  We had a brand new shooter (Warcat) who almost shot a clean match!

Purly and Tucson Tuco, had a wonderful rivalry.  I am proud to say that Triple J, as a lone lady shooter, is an ispiration to us all.  Great to have  Loose Cinch back with us!

Finally, our Ramrod, the ORIGINATOR, of Smoky Mtn. Outlaw, shot a clean

Match today! (His first.)

Fast Harley.
