January 2008 Newsletter:
This
may have been the best participation for a January shoot
we have ever had. The weather cooperated and conditions
were perfect; and as a result we had 77 cowboys and
cowgirls sling lead down range.
Two
new visitors shot with us this month: Jackson Longstreet
and Randy Saint Eagle.
We
had no fewer than four first time shooters:
Blacksmith
Scott
Cottonmouth
Kid
Crocket
Creek Kid
Sassy
Jen (buckaroo)
We hope you all had a good time and hope to see you
again soon.
The
Smoky Mountain Shootist Society is one of the largest
clubs the country. Many of you renewed your memberships,
and thanks for that. Renewals are due January first
with a grace period though the end of March. Those of
you who have not yet done so, please do so soon so that
we can continue to be such a strong club. The fee is
$40 and can be sent to SMSS, P.O. Box 32894, Knoxville,
Tennessee 37930.
SA
Pondwater was the top shooter again in January, beating
out some really stiff competition. Congratulations!!!!
Copperhead Joe placed second. The other top ten in order
were Slater (who had his first clean match), Tabasco
Jot, Festus D. Deputy, Marshall Too Tall, Ocoee Red,
Fiddleback, Buck Dodgers and Double Eagle Dave.
Last Kiss again was the top lady shooter this month.
The rest of the ladies (in order) were Kitty Kitty Bang
Bang, Feather Dancer, Deadeye Diamond, Cookie Lynn,
Short Cake, Moab Mab, Triple J and Sassy Jen.

What
a great day to be shooting. Our posse worked together
all day long which made it even better. We sure did
have a good representation of the categories with one
exception, no women folk. TN Hawk shot a clean match,
well not exactly clean as he was shooting smoky stuff.
Hawk & Owlhoot Hardin provided a glimpse of how
many real cowboys were challenged to see their targets
thru the smoke.Cherokee Deacon & Shenandoah Will
were just one miss from shooting clean matches. Double
Eagle Dave was the lone 49er and finished 10th overall.
Winchester Wood and Bittercreek Jack earned style points
in Classic Cowboy. The Silver Senior category was supported
by Wildcat Wilkey, Shenandoah Will and the infamous
Grouche Olphardt. Ranger Z, Yukon Hootch and the notorious
Preacher Red shot Duelist. There ought to be a special
category for a fellow shooting a Spencer rifle which
only loads seven rounds in the mag tube. Jim Mayo shoots
Double Duelist wh ich is almost a Gunfighter. Speaking
of Gunfighters, Ziggy the Kid is improving with each
match. Dusty Camino was our lone "B" Western
Star and also lent us the use of his pickup to haul
off the targets. Thanks to all for a great day of Cowboy
Action Shooting the East Tennessee way, friendly.

#2 was fun from the get-go. Who said that Tuco and Purly
aren't fun?
The
big Rooster name SLATER reared his head and strutted
thru 5 CLEAN stages. And he did em in quick order too.
Choking
in his dust was FIDDLEBACK and WIDOWMAKER. They tried
to pluck his feathers but he was just too much that
day. TENN CRITR was his usual good shootin self. YANKEE
DUTCHMAN and KENESAW KID filled in some tight time slots
between PURLY and TUCSON TUCO. Those two pards are fun
to watch compete against one another. And just because
Tuco was standing beside Purly's rifle doesn't mean
that he was the one who covered it up with a blanket
on one of the stages. Any witnesses? HOMBRE SIN NOMBRE
creates more smoke than Mt. Saint Helens when he fires
those Smokepoles. He's a lot of fun to watch. CALIBRE
45 shot well but was alittle off his usual deadeye accuracy
self. Cold weather will do that to ya. RAMBLING RASCAL
kept a worried look that MOAB MAB was gona give him
a whoopin. I think she mumbled something like, 'next
month'. DUTCHY RODELL started off each stage and managed
to get a couple CLEANS along the way. One of the most
consciensiously Loadin Table Officers anywhere, GROUNDHOG
MAN, did a great job insuring everyones pistols were
loaded and indexed correctly and that no-one loaded
more than necessesary on any stage. And the big news
of the day is that our posse had 2 new/first time shooters.
They both shot well, worked hard and hopefully had a
great time. CROCKETT CREEK KID and COTTONMOUTH KID both
did very well. Not tooooooo many misses, no 'P's, and
no DQ's. These are two young whippersnappers that us
older folks are gona have to watch out for. They'll
do very well in the near future.
If
I counted correctly, Posse 2 had SIX category winners:
Traditional,
Gunfighter, Elder Statesman, Senior, Frontier Cartridge,
and Double Duelist (and three of the match’s clean
shooters – two of ‘em, RAMBLIN RASCAL and
SLATER shot clean for the first time).
Congratulations
Pards.
