July 2008 Newsletter:

July 12th was a typical hot humid summer day but the weather did not deter 81 shooters from signing up for a great Smoky Mountain Shoot.  It was a special day as we honored our original officers and our charter members but, in particular, we honored our first Ramrod, Owlhoot Hardin, who was selected by SASS and SMSS as a SASS Regulator and Last Kiss, our Marshal, who earned the SASS ROIII badge.  These are wonderful achievements but it also acknowledges the eminence and maturity of the Smoky Mountain Shootist Society that was established on March 11, 1998.

The original officers were Owlhoot Hardin (Ramrod), Vinegarroon (Assistant Ramrod) Yakima Canutt (Foreman), Dell Hughes (Secretary), Flash LaBrew (Bean Counter), Tim Ford (Marshal) and David Mays (Historian).

The charter members were Ab Blocker, Arizona Joe, Big, Clint Westwood, Dutch, Flash LaBrew, Jack Benteen, Tim Ford, Stuart Lowe, Owlhoot Hardin, Rhett Mosby, River Jordan, Tennessee Hawk, Vinegarroon and Yakima Canutt.

We all owe them a debt of gratitude.

Welcome to two new club members; Chance Decker and Amorous Ali.  Welcome aboard.  Also three new shooters Steely I Justice, Little Pup and Bull.  Hope you shoot with us soon again.

Marshal Too Tall was taller than all other 80 shooters this month.  The top Gunfighter this month was Fast Harley and placed second overall after Marshall Too Tall.  The other top ten shooters were Clancy O’Conall (also top in the Traditional category), Fiddleback, Ocoee Red, Tabasco Jot (also first Modern shooter), Widowmaker Hill, Last Kiss (top Lady and Ladies Gunfighter), Festus D Deputy and Tennessee Mongo.

As mentioned before, the top lady this month was Last Kiss (also 8th overall).  The rest of the top ten ladies were Kitty Kitty Bang Bang (Ladies 49er), Mrs Pleasant (Ladies 49er), Calico Nicole (Ladies Young Gun), Tequila Liz (Ladies Traditional), Cookie Lynn (Ladies Traditional), Amorous Ali (Ladies 49er), Feather Dancer (Ladies Senior), Pinecone Lily (Ladies Tradional) and Dixie Rebel Rose (Ladies Traditional).

The Smoky Mountain Shootist Society is one of the largest clubs the country.  Many of you renewed your memberships, and thanks for that.  Renewals are due January first with a grace period though the April match.  Those of you who have not yet done so, please do so soon, so that we can continue to be such a strong club.  The fee is $40 and can be sent to SMSS, P.O. Box 32894, Knoxville, Tennessee 37930.
